Dance Class PSL - My Fall Favorites List

Hello Reader,

If you have been in my circle for a while, you probably already know this....but fall is my absolute favorite season! There is something about the crisp air, the cool breeze, and the changing leaves that makes me want it to last for 6 months.

Here in the Midwest, it only lasts about one month (if we're lucky) before the winter-y cold temps start to hit.......

Which is why I like to make the most of fall -- including in my dance classes!

I was listening to this episode of the Lazy Genius podcast on Monday, where the host, Kendra, was talking about how to make this season "feel like fall" to you. It might be in an activity you do, a candle you like to use, food you like to cook, and more, as a way to enjoy the season and make good memories too. It occurred to me that the dance class activities I plan and use each fall are an extension of this idea.

So, like your favorite pumpkin spice latte or special fall drink, I'm here to share how embracing the fun of fall can make your classes feel extra special this season.

I have given some of my favorite fall games a facelift, and they are now available in my shop. Here are the games I will be using this week in my classes:

Dancing Trees Concepts in my Junior Level Contemporary class

Tappy Apples in my Petite Level Tap class

Sounds of Autumn in my Teen Level Tap class

In the blog post below, you can find all of the other simple ways to infuse a fall feeling into your classes, in less than 5 minutes!

FROM THE BLOG ARCHIVES:

5 Minutes of Fall Fun For Dance Class

Inside, I talk about:

  • How using just 5 minutes of your class time with a fall theme can enhance learning
  • How props do the heavy lifting when it comes to engagement
  • And how to incorporate a fall theme with dance class props you probably already have

The ideas in this post are ones I come back to year after year, and I think you will too.

THIS MONTH & LOOKING AHEAD

I’ve been working on (and continue to work on) giving my fall dance resources -- for all ages -- an update. You can find them all here → AUTUMN THEME RESOURCES

  • getting all my best Halloween resources in tip-top shape

In the meantime, here's the details on the resources I personally am using in my classes this month!

Trees are graceful. Trees are rooted. Trees bend with the wind and grow toward the light — and so do dancers. Dancing Trees uses the imagery of trees to guide students through modern-based movement, helping them explore posture, energy, growth, and expression from the ground up. $7.99

Turn your tap class into an apple-picking adventure! Tappy Apples is a printable, ready-to-play game that helps young dancers practice tap steps while they move, problem-solve, and take turns like pros. Three activities in one. $10.99

Sounds of Autumn invites your tap students to turn the sounds of the season into rhythm, imagery, and imagination. Tap dance can tell a story and stir up feeling just like any other style, and this activity shows your dancers how to use their tap vocabulary to paint a sound picture of fall. With adaptations for use for ALL levels. $9.99

Thanks for reading — I’m always glad you’re here.

I'll be back next month with fresh ideas, my favorite Halloween games, and plenty more dance class inspiration to share.

I don’t just make dance resources -- I’m a dance teacher too!

Hello Reader, It is August, and back-to-dance season is here. (How can summer be over??) This summer was a different one for me, shifting away from my prior responsibilities as a studio owner and into my role at a new studio, as a teacher and curriculum director. TEACHER mode activated. It has been a gift to have the opportunity to examine my teaching resources in a more in-depth way than I have had time to, in a long while. The result? Lots of really good updates to Dance Dance Hooray...

Hello Reader, New season, new set of wiggly, excited dancers......and you already know the challenge: getting a room full of 4-year-olds (or 6-year-olds, or 10-year-olds for that matter!) to freeze in place and listen on cue, when needed. The Sit Down Freeze, my brand new back-to-school resource, is a stop-and-go dance game built exactly for that. It teaches young dancers to turn a simple visual or verbal cue into an instant, still, seated pose — so when you need to regroup, give directions,...

In dance training, if technique is the "what" and the "how", then artistry is the "why". Artistry is the element that lifts skill, makes it human, and makes connection possible. It is what makes dance feel *magical* to us all. Like dance technique, it has to be cultivated and it requires an environment where students feel safe to take chances, find their personal voice, and try something new. The good news -- the "when" and the "who" -- is that you can start anytime and with any age level....
